Buddhagaya, November 18: The Maha Bodhi International Conference on “Pali and Buddhism” was successfully held on 17th November 2024 at the Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala Memorial Hall, located within the premises of the Maha Bodhi Society of India, Buddhagaya Centre.
The theme of the conference, “Pali: India’s Classical Language and the Legacy of the Buddha”, highlighted the enduring significance of the Pali language and its pivotal role in preserving and propagating the timeless teachings of Lord Buddha.
The event was organized by the Maha Bodhi Society of India, in collaboration with the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, New Delhi. Most Venerable P. Seewalee Thero, General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India, and Shri Anirban Ganguly, Chairman of the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, graced the occasion. Both delivered thought-provoking addresses, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting Pali and Buddhist philosophy in the modern era.
This distinguished gathering brought together eminent scholars, researchers, and practitioners from across the globe to delve into the historical, cultural, and philosophical dimensions of Pali as a classical language. The sessions also examined its invaluable contributions to global Buddhist heritage and its enduring relevance in contemporary times.
The conference was a celebration of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi’s historic decision to grant Classical Language status to Pali, a milestone recognizing its rich legacy and profound impact on Indian and global culture.
The event witnessed the esteemed participation of senior monks from Sri Lanka, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand, along with representatives from the Chakma Buddhist Association, academia, and the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee. These dignitaries reflected on the significance of this recognition and its positive impact on the global Buddhist community.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Angaraj Choudhary, a veteran scholar from the Vipassana Research Institute, Igatpuri, and one of the foremost proponents of Pali. His inspiring speech underscored the profound legacy of the Buddha and highlighted the timeless relevance of the Pali language as a vehicle for his teachings.
Throughout the conference, an impressive array of scholars presented deep and insightful explorations of Pali, shedding light on its multifaceted role as a repository of the Buddha’s teachings.
