Ven. Medawala Sudhammalankara Thero was born in Medawala in Kandy District of Sri Lanka on 30 June 1954. His father was M. B. Ekanayake. He had his ordination in 1968. He had his Higher Ordination
Syamopali Maha Nikaya, Malwatha Chapter, Malwatta Mahaviharaya, Kandy, Sri Lanka on 23 June 1975. His preceptor was Dr. Ellawala Nandisvara Nayaka Thero. He had his further Monastic education at Vidyalankara Pirivena, Pannipitiya, Sri Lanka. He had his school education in Sri Lanka. Later he passed his B.A. (Hons), M.A, and M.Phil. Examinations in Pali from Calcutta University in 1988, 1990 and 1991 respectively.
He joined Chennai Centre of the Maha Bodhi Society of Sri Lanka on November 1972 and served the Centre upto April 1979. He joined The Maha Bodhi Society of India, Headquarters at Kolkata as a Dharmaduta member on 24 June 1984. He served as Assistant Bhikkhu-in- Charge of Sri Dharmarajika Chetiya Vihara, Kolkata from 1985 to 1990. He held the post of Bhikkhu-in-Charge from 1990 to 2007. He was Deputy General Secretary of Maha Bodhi Society of India from 1995 to 2007. He was selected as Joint Secretary on 2011, but due to ill-health went back to Sri Lanka for treatment. He was again selected as Joint Secretary in the Governing Body meeting held on 5 July 2014 and continue held the post upto 2015 when was appointed as General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India in the Annual General Meeting held on 12 November 2015.
